Why WhatsApp
In Ecuador and across most of Latin America, WhatsApp is the channel where people ask, request quotes and buy. If your business takes hours to reply (or only replies during office hours), the customer moves on to whoever answered first. An AI chatbot replies instantly, at any hour, and turns that speed into sales.
The regular app isn't enough
First thing to understand: the WhatsApp on your phone and the official channel for automation are not the same thing. Connecting an AI system requires the WhatsApp Business API, Meta's official route: a dedicated number, verified in your company's name, running in the cloud and allowed to reply automatically within the platform's rules. Automating "through workarounds" on the regular app breaks Meta's terms and can end with your number blocked.
What a modern chatbot does (and what the old ones did)
The bots of a few years ago were rigid menus: "type 1 for prices". A chatbot with generative AI actually converses: it understands the question however it's written, remembers what was said earlier, replies in the customer's language and knows when to hand the conversation to a person.
The best ones are no longer limited to text. Our own assistant, IntelliA, also understands voice notes, images and PDF documents, because that's how real people write on WhatsApp.
The questions you should ask a provider
- Does it remember context? A bot that forgets what you said two messages ago frustrates more than it helps.
- How does it hand over to a human? There must be a clear handover when the case requires it, history included.
- What happens to the data? Demand encryption, a published privacy policy and defined retention periods.
- Can the customer opt out? Writing "STOP" must always work. It's basic respect, and it's the rule.
- Does it use Meta's official channel? If the answer is vague, be suspicious.
- What happens when it doesn't know something? The correct answer is to admit it and pass it on, never to invent.
Timelines and process
A serious project starts with a diagnosis of your real conversations, moves on to a prototype you approve, and launches as a controlled pilot before opening up to all your customers. In our case, most implementations go live within 2 to 6 weeks.
